My classroom has 2-4 typically developing students and approximately 12 students who are 3 to 5 years old with various disabilities. Some are Developmentally Delayed, others have Autism, some may have Cerebral Palsy, or Down Syndrome just to name a few. As they arrive each day, they come in are expected to put their belongings away and wish their parents well and greet one another. They continue by "signing" their names and work on their assigned activity. Usually, they come in with a smile and ready to enjoy their day. It is amazing to see how these little ones face each day regardless or their challenges. Most of them are from low income households. Our school is a high poverty Title 1 school, where many students are receiving free or reduced lunch. It is amazing to see how these children manage to come in with a big smile and make our world brighter. They definitely deserve our compassion and understanding.
