The middle school visual arts curriculum at Bateman is centered around the investigation, creation, presentation, and interpretation of works of art. The Elements of Art and Principles of Design provide the framework and terminology by which we analyze and discuss ours and others' art pieces in an objective manner. Discussions related to artists, art movements, and art styles, then, serve as the basis for us recognizing the beautifully subjective nature of art. Students in this class are exposed to a wide range of media, tools, and techniques. My as an arts educator is to nurture a classroom setting in which all students remain motivated and engaged through choice-based projects. By encouraging students to make art that serves as a visual extension of their unique style, personality, and visual identity, students are far more likely to embrace visual arts as a lifelong hobby and pursuit.
