Hello! My name is Lauren Corcoran and I am so excited to begin my next teaching journey as a 5th grade teacher. I will be in a self-contained class of 30 students, all with various needs, skills and talents. My students need to be exposed to a variety of types of texts to get the most out of their learning this year. My class will use picture books to dig deep into story elements, recognize diversity, practice summarizing and write in response to these shorter books. There are so many ways that my students can utilize this diverse selection of books. These books can serve as... - Read-alouds to discuss grade-appropriate topics, like story elements. - Mentor texts to learn more about specific subjects, such as "Hidden Figures" and women's involvement in the Space Race. - Books to enhance their character education, teaching them about cooperation, self-control and empathy ("Do Unto Otters"). I am so grateful for the outpour of support that I have received in my past 2 years of teaching, and look forward to starting this brand new adventure!
