Math manipulatives are necessary in every math classroom. Having these items in my classroom will help to make my Math lessons engaging and fun. A lot is expected of third graders in North Carolina. It is their first year of End of Grade testing and to prepare for these they have to take a lot of tests throughout the year. These items also serve stronger purpose. Hands on activities provide a concrete understanding of Math concepts. Before students can memorize multiplication facts they need to understand where the answers come from. We use base ten blocks to aid in representing and solving multi-digit addition and subtraction problems, as well as word problems with multiple problem-solving steps. Third grade is also the year that students are introduced to problem solving with fractions. Fraction tiles and fraction circles are a necessary hands-on tool my students need to visualize and understand what fractions are. My goal is to make my students feel relaxed when taking their tests because they have such a strong understanding of what is being asked of them. With the use of manipulatives such as colored tiles, base ten blocks, pattern blocks, and fraction tiles, my students will be prepared and confident in their math abilities!
