I teach high school English in Oakland, Ca. I see how smart my students are, even the ones who have never read a book in their lives. The problem is that nobody has ever introduced them to books that they can directly relate to, which in turn a teacher can then use to turn them on to all different kinds of literature. As a teacher for nine years, I have become very good at finding books urban teens enjoy, the trick is simply being able to afford the library to hold them.
