We use them every day to evaluate area formulas, solve missing sides of right triangles using Pythagorean Theorem, and will continue to use them for trigonometry and solid geometry later in the year. I am grateful that each student in my classes can use their own independent calculator to keep up the classes' pace and to be able to assess each individual student.\r\n\r\n10th graders this year were in 4th grade when they were sent home for COVID lockdown. They completed the end of that year as well as their entire 5th grade year in distance learning - likely missing out on many critical social and academic developments during that time. Addressing the resulting gaps in math fluency takes a two pronged approach - we try to practice and reclaim some of the basics that may have been missed, but at the same time, many students rely on calculators in order to keep up with the grade-level content while they catch up and become more comfortable with ordinary operations.\r\n\r\nNot only does the class set of calculators help students solve problems that are difficult by hand (square roots and trig functions for example), but it also helps build confidence for students who are years behind in their math development. Your contributions make a real difference in our classrooms each day.\r\n\r\nHere, technology is not just a convenience—it's a powerful tool that helps our students explore, create, and engage with learning in ways that weren't possible before. For example, students are using their dedicated calculators to collaborate on projects, practice essential skills, and complete homework after school.\r\n\r\nWhat excites our students most about these calculators is the fact they don't have to borrow them from the other classes. So they don't have to waste time tracking them down. I also love that I don't have other teachers demanding that I return their calculators to math classes. Lol\r\n\r\nAll of the students in my class are students with disabilities. They depend on calculators to finish classwork, complete tests and homework. These books have opened up media possibilities to include collage, pastel, watercolor, water-soluble graphite, color pencil, and more. It's clear that the students feel more like artists working with such high quality materials, as opposed to the $1.50 sketchbooks we usually have to settle for as a Title 1 school with a limited budget. \r\n\r\nIn addition to experiencing the technical differences of working on more expensive paper, students also have had a chance to create and explore on a larger scale without the pressure of \"using up\" precious resources. Some of the projects you can see in the photos include a memorial drawing honoring a friend who had passed away, reproductions and homages to artists they admire, and \"Immigrant Warrior\" drawings (this one was especially meaningful since 85% of our students are immigrants or children of immigrants, and the political shifts in January led to a very fearful climate at our school).
