Ukuleles are a fantastic instrument in middle school general music class because of their relative ease of play, small size, pleasant tone, and low cost when compared to guitars, piano keyboards, and plastic recorders. New ukuleles will be faster to tune and pose fewer problems for students, allowing more class time for instruction. The amazement on a student's face when she first learns to change between chords on her favorite song is priceless. I have seen these instruments change the way students define themselves. Being able to play through a song makes them musicians! We use these instruments to work cooperatively in groups, as soloists, and to preform in school concerts.
