My students are bright and full of potential. They are genuinely interested in science and many of them dream of a career in science after college. A large majority of my students will be the first generation of college graduates in their families. With 90% of our student body qualifying for the free lunch program, few of my students have been able to travel to interesting places such as the other-worldly backdrop of Africa's Kalahari Desert. At the same time, the majority of my students' parents have a first language that is not English. My students have very little access to this type of nonfiction and any chance to read helps develop English skills that don't get developed in the home.
