Gustavo Dudamel (the great young Venezuelan conductor and musical director of the L.A. Symphony who had his beginnings in "El Sistema") said, "MUSIC SAVED MY LIFE and has saved the lives of thousands of at risk children in Venezuela...like food, like health care, like education, MUSIC has to be a right for every citizen." Like Dudamel most of my students at Swann Middle School come from poverty BUT they are RICH in talent, hope and academic possibility. Performing arts in a public school setting have been a realistic "key" to unlock the dreams and possibilities for so many who are disadvantaged. I envision our student led, "Hair Spray Civil Rights Project" helping us liberate another generation of students to achieve their goals and dreams.
