I teach Science and Writing to a group of diverse fourth grade students who come from low income families, many living in the city housing project across the street from the school. I am constantly impressed with their resilience and desire to learn, despite the many challenges they face at home. My students come to school eager, energetic and willing to work hard at their studies. This is the first year my school is departmentalizing across the fourth grade, meaning I will be teaching my subjects to all 80 students divided into three classes. There is a broad range of students in this mix: general education students, English Language Learners, and special education students with learning disabilities and/or behavioral issues. Unfortunately, my school, despite getting federal aid as a Title I institution, cannot fund even the most basic supplies, nor can many of the students afford them.
