My kindergarten and first grade students are bursting with excitement about learning! Through grants and donations we have built a new school garden, complete with a trellis and "cages" to keep out the wild chickens. We have also received a new observation beehive, so that the kids can safely observe the inner-workings of a honeybee hive! Our Alaka'i O Kaua'i Charter School is a free public charter school on Kahili Mountain on the island of Kauai. We are nestled in the mountain that graces us with waterfalls, as well as wild goats, pigs, and chickens! Project-based learning is the focus for our charter school, and our keiki get down and dirty very regularly: planting, tending, harvesting, and eating their own garden-grown lettuce, carrots, and more. They also love to make selfie videos sharing their learning with their families: from filming butterflies emerging from chrysalises to reading their weekly news.
