My students work with me in the only 4/5 combination class on campus and come from a varying degree of cultural, intellectual and socioeconomic backgrounds. Being able to meet the needs of all 33 kids each and every day is a challenge, to say the least. Each child enters my class with his/her own trunk of luggage from home that has to be sifted through and somewhat overcome before any teaching can even REALLY begin, and it is my goal to try and minimize distraction and any outside deterrents that may get in the way of their learning. I cannot control what goes on at home, or how much support each child will or will not get from their families. While they are in my class, however, I can make the environment as learning friendly, distraction free, and make available multiple modalities for acquiring knowledge so that each child can be successful.
