My students are all eager to learn. Many of them, however, struggle with sensory issues that get in the way of their ability to focus in the classroom. Much of their energy is spent seeking or avoiding sensory input, robbing them of valuable learning time. My project is a sensory support system that will enable my students to be calm enough to learn during their school day. With the help of sensory tools in the classroom, students will be able to sit and attend to learning activities. A child who is unable to remain seated may be able to sit longer with a weighted stuffed animal in their lap. A child who is overwhelmed by the noise and movement of a classroom may be calmed by the gentle pressure from sitting inside an inflatable pea-pod. A student who feels the need to flap or clap their hands repeatedly may be quieted by a vibrating toy in their hands. Your thoughtful donation to this project will provide a variety of sensory supports for my students. My hope is to have a wide variety of strategies available to meet the needs of my diverse population of students. Each child has a unique set of gifts and a unique set of needs. If we help to meet their needs, we will allow them to shine!
