These books are helping my Deaf and Hard of Hearing students build vocabulary, strengthen comprehension, and connect language to real-life experiences—especially through visual supports and sign language elements.\r\n\r\nAs an itinerant Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) teacher—and the only DHH specialist in our district—I serve over 30 students from birth through Grade 12. These books allow me to provide consistent, accessible literacy support across multiple schools and age groups. They introduce important skills such as sequencing, retelling, making connections, and self-advocacy—helping students understand their hearing differences and how to express their needs.\r\n\r\nReading in my sessions is highly interactive. We use visuals, guided discussions, repetition, and multimodal communication—including spoken language, gestures, and sign—to ensure full access. Students actively participate by retelling stories, answering questions, and connecting the text to their own experiences.\r\n\r\nSome of my students are especially drawn to books that reflect hearing loss and sign language. They become more engaged, ask thoughtful questions, and show increased confidence when they see themselves represented. Your support is not just providing books—it is helping my students build language, confidence, and a strong sense of identity.","fullyFundedDate":1776445307183,"projectUrl":"project/voices-beyond-sound-books-on-hearing-lo/10186874/","projectTitle":"Voices Beyond Sound: Books on Hearing Loss & Sign Language","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Arielle","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10336781_orig.jpg?crop=1471,1471,x635,y1572&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1761842983241","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10336781"},{"teacherId":10216124,"projectId":9640708,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of my students with learning disabilities. Your kindness truly makes a difference in our classroom.\r\n\r\nMany of my students have unique learning needs and communicate in different ways. The books you helped provide are now part of our visual supports, encouraging them to explore communication through stories and pictures. During story time in our circle, each learner gets a copy of the book we are reading. This practice helps them build independence, follow simple instructions, and practice imitating words and phrases found in the story.\r\n\r\nThrough these books, my students are developing early language and literacy skills—expressing themselves, connecting ideas, and finding joy in learning. Your contribution has made our classroom a more engaging and inclusive environment, where every child feels seen, supported, and inspired to grow.\r\n\r\nMy students truly enjoy the books and show great enthusiasm during story time. Books such as Eric Carle's \"The Very Hungry Caterpillar\" are especially beneficial to them. The engaging artwork and repetitive text make this book a perfect tool for supporting language development.\r\n\r\nThe children quickly began to request that we read together each day.
