One of my most memorable moments in school was eighth grade Home Economics class where we learned to bake chocolate chip cookies, iron clothes properly and sew garments using various types of fabrics. This class was interesting to me because it was so very different from the normal academics I was accustomed to in school. Unfortunately, many schools no longer teach home economics. These inquisitive, energetic 8th graders need to learn more than reading, writing and arithmetic. Since the popularity of reality shows like Project Runway I've noticed a new found interest in sewing and cloth making. I wish to tap into their creative sides and give them a different perception of what school can be. I've canvassed my classes to gauge interest in an after school sewing club. Surprisingly, the boys were just as interested as the girls! " Can I make myself a shirt, Mrs. G?" one boy asked. The kids are excited and so am I!
