Photojournalism is an essential component to both the newspaper and yearbook classes at my school. Between the two staffs, we have 6 point-and-shoot Cannon cameras, which work nicely for quick, day-to-day work, but they are not adequate for more challenging photography, such as sports photography. Furthermore, many of my students are interested in learning more advanced photography skills that require a DSLR camera. The basic photography skills that students learn are more conceptual and can even be accomplished with a cell phone, but every year, I have students who realize that they have a passion and talent for photography. They long to learn the type of skills that professional photographers use. The DSLR camera I have chosen is a great camera for beginning photographers. It is fairly easy to use and would build confidence in students to develop real-life career skills. Who knows? I might have a future Ansel Adams or Annie Leibovitz on staff!
