Some students struggle with learning how to enjoy reading because they have never been shown how reading can be fun. Campfire Reading will be the starting point of how we can change their view of reading from boring to exciting and enjoyable. With this project, students will each have a copy of The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman and a finger flashlight. Before we begin reading, I will darken our classroom and project a campfire onto a screen as students are finding a comfortable spot for reading time. While we are reading, students will be tracking the words in their book with their finger flashlight. We will plan to read one chapter each week during the fall season until we have finished the book. After each chapter, my students will be completing an activity that goes along with the book to help them better comprehend what they have read in class. Reading different types of genres in class will help my students find what types they like best so that they can enjoy reading more. The Graveyard Book will open the doors to many different types of genres my students may be interested in such as legends, mystery, and fantasy fiction. By changing the atmosphere for reading and exploring different types of genres throughout the school year, we can truly open the doors for students to love reading. This class set of books will introduce new vocabulary to students, show them how to be creative when writing a story, and expand their imaginations through reading while exploring a brand new world.
