Dougherty Valley High U.S History students are by far the most impressive group of students. Their diverse population complements our studies of history as they bring rich backgrounds and different understandings of history. I hope to capitalize on this by transforming my classroom. My goal is to invite students to study history through a social justice lens of their choosing. As we progress through history they create a portfolio of how history impacted the lens they are studying. To begin the year they will create a thesis statement derived from their social justice lens and collect resources to support their findings. I strongly believe this will help these young adults find empathy in people from all walks of life and better understand how having a strong voice can have a positive impact on history. When we remove high stake exams, that provide so future value, students will find value in their learning.
