Good basic lab equipment is essential to lab and student safety. To effectively teach the basics of chemistry, cell structure, even earth science, heavy duty glassware is vital. One of our favorite labs is learning convections currents by making hot cocoa. Heavy duty, clear beakers that won't shatter make this possible. We are able to witness the rise and fall of the milk and cocoa as it heats and cools, the bubbles form, the cracks in the crust of the cocoa, the pyroclastic explosions of milk burst through. And at the very end of it all, we get to drink hot cocoa. But we cant do any of this when our 30+ year old beakers shatter in the middle of our experiment.
