My students' interests are as diverse as they are, which contributes to the richness of our school community. In a school of over 2,000 students, our teens read everything from graphic novels and manga to mystery, science fiction, and romance. Some seek the quiet of the library to read, reflect, or study, while others search for community through board games, puzzles, and quiet conversation. Many are drawn to exploring world religions, historic events, ancient mythology, or even how things are made—from baking to car engines. My students come from diverse cultural backgrounds, speak various languages, and bring unique experiences and perspectives into the library every day. Despite the challenges of poverty, my students show up with curiosity, resilience, and compassion—for both their own learning and for one another. Supporting them means recognizing their academic needs and honoring their human ones.
