My students live in East Oakland where they experience crime, violence, poverty, and other trauma. Students in my class are low-Income African-American and Latino students. Over 50% are English Learners. Last year, the students improved their academic scores by 15% school-wide. However, our school is still one of the lowest performing schools in Oakland. Our staff and administration hope to change that this year and we have a plan for seeing it through. I know and believe that my students' special learning needs create a challenge for their academic progress, but it does not hinder their learning or growth. Since many of my students are currently performing at below grade level my goals for my students this school year are to help them reach grade level in literacy and other school subjects. With the belief that all students deserve a personalized education, deserve to have their needs met, and can succeed academically, my students and I will work towards meeting their goals!
