My classroom is a working student newsroom where young journalists learn by doing. My students are reporters, writers, photographers, designers, broadcasters and storytellers who work together to document the life of our school and keep our community informed. I teach journalism, broadcast journalism and yearbook at a large public high school in South Florida. My students bring different backgrounds, experiences and abilities to our classroom, but each has the opportunity to find their voice and discover that their stories matter. Students interview, write, photograph, film, edit, design and publish for real audiences. Along the way, they develop confidence, curiosity, critical thinking, media literacy, teamwork and leadership. DonorsChoose helps provide the tools, resources and opportunities that allow my students to learn, create and become thoughtful, informed communicators.
