Students born in refugee camps can experience all the world has to offer! I work at a public school that serves as a magnet for newcomers to the USA. We are a high needs school with about 90% of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. We work closely with the refugee community and have dedicated classrooms providing language support to students new to the country. My classroom has students from many countries: Nepal, Burma, Eritrea, Jordan, Iraq, Tajikistan, and Mexico. There are 7 languages represented in one class of 15 students! They are in 6th grade and have been in the country for 2 years or less. Many have never had education before arriving here. They are amazing students- resilient, creative, and hard working! Most of them have a goal of returning to their country in the future in order to make it a better place.
