Currently, students learn the basics of debate via a combination of direct classroom instruction and tutoring by varsity students. While this has had a great deal of success, I know we can do better. The Great Debate is an accessible but thorough introduction to policy and public forum debate that clearly and effectively outlines the basics of these debate forms. The clarity provided by this text will also help create greater equity in debate for students who don't come from families with a history of speech and debate by outlining the basics of these two primary forms of debate in a way that clarifies much of the initial mystery.
