My school is a small public school. There are approximately 360 students, 96% of which receive free or reduced lunch. We are privileged to serve a diverse population of students, who are mostly Latino and African-American, and come from neighborhoods with high levels of poverty. In past years, our school did not have the resources or available staff to have a girl's soccer team, despite the magnitude of girls interested in the sport. Our team is a compilation of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade girls who are both athletic and academically successful. They are good natured and silly young ladies, despite the hardships they face in everyday life. Many of the girls on the team are unable to buy the necessities the sport demands, such as water bottles, sports bras, and cleats.
