I have been fortunate to establish a collaboration with a local fish pond that connects with the ocean. This site will be visited weekly for the entire academic year. We plan to perform water quality tests and aquatic organism surveys. In addition to this site, we will visit local streams, ponds and estuaries to contrast and compare the water quality. Many of our waterways are heavily impacted by an abundance of cesspools upstream. This combined with heavy rainfall and agriculture (historical and current) in our tropical environment leads to a myriad of water quality issues. My goal is to have students understand the issues and sources of water quality issues on our small island home so that they can be inspired to be environmental stewards now and into their future, wherever they will end up living and whatever career paths they choose.
