We recently asked our students to share their ideas on how we can work together to create a more positive school environment. Many students shared their thoughts about the physical environment itself and how it lacks comfort and appeal. Our students came up with the idea of creating a "Leopard Zen Den" where students can enjoy a calm and relaxing space that looks modern and appealing. Our students can use the space as a place to cool down when they need to regroup. Other times it can be used for students who are trying to find a quiet place to do assignments. We also have two large televisions in the room where students can practice yoga and meditation techniques to calm down and relax. We need the supplies from this project to help get the room up and running. Alternative seating will be available to the students throughout the room. One area will be for meditation in which the floor cushions would be used. Students could also use the floor cushions to sit on while drawing in their sketchbook or crafting with clay for an art therapy experience. Many students prefer to draw or color to regulate their emotions. Art therapy has been very beneficial for my students when they are going through a difficult situation. The diffuser will also help create a relaxed atmosphere as the essential oils fill the room. Overall, this new space could not only transform our school, but also the way students think of school - a place they want to come to every day.
