A class set of The Hate U Give would provide my students the opportunity to read an accessible and relevant work from a commendable author of color and would serve as the foundation of a unit on perspective and identity. Currently, the books provided to us by our district to use in our English I classrooms are predominentally written by white men. If my students could have copies of The Hate U Give they would have the opportunity to engage with a relevant and engaging story that is both about people of color and written by a person of color. The Hate U Give is an excellent text for my students due to the fact that it is both accessible in its readability but challenging in its message. I know this book will be one my students will both relate to and grapple through, and it will propel my students to gain perspective, think critically, and engage with real world issues.
