Gone are the days of worksheets and busy work as we usher in a more enlightened exchange between teachers, students, and classwork. Through the use of STEAM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics - as well as sensory friendly materials, students get to participate in their learning through building, experiments, and creativity. In an effort to give my students the most beneficial and beautiful experience in school, we need class materials that inspire thinking, questioning, and exploration. We need games, educational toys, various kinds of building blocks, creative arts supplies, visual resources, items to hone fine motor skills, and equipment that encourages gross motor development. The building items such as Legos, straws and connectors, gear set, magnetic blocks, tube locks, and play-doh will inspire kids to problem solve and become engineers. The iPad will be a wonderful addition to the classroom to be used for science, math, and reading. The tracing pads will be used as light tables to provide a multi-sensory experience. And the center kits will be a great way to teach students math and reading in a way that feels more like play than work. When you witness students working toward a goal and hear them express what they're doing in their own words, it's hard not to beam with pride and pat yourself on the back. As a supporter in this effort, you are assisting me in laying the foundation of a life of learning for not only the students I have now but also the ones I'll have in the many years to come.
