Our school is in northeastern Connecticut. This small town of about 10,000 people is 65% Latino, from all parts of Latin America, including Puerto Rico and Mexico. All of our children are bilingual, and in our Dual Language Program, called Companeros, we work towards biliteracy as well. In Connecticut, school funding is based on real estate taxes, and because our district is in a low income area, we have less of a tax base than other school districts. Our kids have fewer opportunities than other children in areas with higher incomes, and our school has less money for maintaining and providing for classrooms. Our dedicated teachers spend a lot of their own money to make classrooms inviting, but a large ticket item like a carpet is out of reach for most teacher salaries. Our children deserve to have comfortable, clean, inviting classrooms, no matter what the economic status of their parents.
