We are building a classroom library from scratch and want to start with texts that grapple with culture and identity and provide windows into other lives as well as relevant and thought-provoking reflections. Highly engaging texts for independent reading - Speak, The Tattoo, The Red-Headed Hawaiian, and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian - will transform our English classroom. Students will get to read relatable, award-winning, rich texts that deal with Hawaii, other native communities, and the complexities of being a teen. For Kauai, Anahola, and our school community still recovering from the floods, these kinds of resources are invaluable. Although we love our selected ELA curriculum, it is up to teachers to enrich students' reading experiences and provide books that feel at once challenging, familiar, and relevant. Without an established classroom, school, or community library, this is the first step...
