Our school is located in a very rural area of Hawaii. Although we live in Paradise, Paradise comes with a pretty high price tag. My students come from a low socio-economic neighborhood. At least a third of my students are homeless or living in shelters. Our school has 59% free and reduced lunch. Many of my students do not speak English as their first language. Many of them also have several siblings in school, so their parents cannot afford to get supplies for all of the children. In the past I have used much of my own money to purchase supplies for the students. However, this past year one of my students had a family tragedy that landed her in foster care, so my husband and I became her foster parents. This left me with less money to provide supplies for my students this year.
