Gelli plate printing is an amazing tool that allows for students to learn about mono printing, while also learning about how you can use recycling and the materials around us in our everyday lives to create artwork. The process involves rolling paint onto a Gelli plate, finding different materials to scrape away the paint to leave a design you like- or you can leave materials on top like leaves or bubblewrap, laying a piece of paper on top of the plate, and last you rub the top of your paper on the plate and pull away your paper to find the paint that you did not take away- printed onto your paper. The Gelli plates are reusable and can teach students about mono printing and recycling for years to come! Not many elementary schoolers get the opportunity to printmake or use Gelli plates, but I know my students will be very engaged in this project and will have fun finding materials that they can use to create a mono print.
