Proper PPE equipment such as lab coats in science labs are important to my students safety. Lab coats will help my students stay focused on the experiment being performed in the lab. It will make a huge difference in boosting their self esteem and how they retain the lesson because they will not have to worry about their clothes being damaged by an experiment. Being that lab eperiments are hands on and need proper supervision our lab coats will only be used in the classroom and not at home. We perform labs such as, DNA Extraction, Isolation of the DNA, Blood Type of Unknown samples, etc. These labs open my students up to new experiences. Presently, I have two lab coats in my classroom, mine and one size small available to my students. You have to be petit to wear it. My students come in all shapes and sizes, constantly discussing how much they wish they can have a lab coat on like mine. I know that having the proper gear on while performing lab experiements will not only keep them motivated on the lesson, but allow them to feel like an actual scientist. I have seen first hand how students come to class and become inspired wanting to further their interest in the career field of science and bio-medical. My students are the underdogs, the rejects, the one that persevere when they are left behind. They are amazing despite the oppositions they face. Something as simple as proper PPE, like wearing a lab coat during a lab experiment makes them feel that a career in science is not only obtainable, but tangible!
