Covid changed us, as teachers and people. It has been a heart wrenching to watch our students as they struggle to overcome the learning deficits. They have endured trauma on many levels, in their homes due to their families circumstances and at school due to our lack of being in a face to face setting. We are a very small rural school with limited resources. It is just the “norm” for us to purchase whatever we need for our classroom. Each day I want to do ALL I can to help my students recover from their loss of learning. We have a curriculum, but I am always supplementing based on the individual needs of my students. This year, I spent several hundred dollars purchasing supplemental hands on activities from Teachers Pay Teachers and running them off in color and laminating them. I have made them interactive by putting magnetic tape on the back so we can use them on my magnetic whiteboard. My whiteboard is 8 foot long and has many scratches and lots of old writing that will not come off after many attempts and types of cleaners. It is very poor quality, but all we could afford at the time. I dream of having a 12 foot whiteboard that we could leave all these activities on throughout the day while we are working on these skills. Currently, I have to take them down in order to have enough space to write. Visual learning is so important at this age. Also, I have requested phonics cards and posters that I can use in whole and small groups to reinforce some of these skills they need to master to become successful readers. These extra tools will aid in helping me help my students to reach their academic goals!
