Studies have shown that practicing mindfulness in the classroom through meditation have improved student focus, retention, and overall health. Since the recent pandemic, I have seen an increase in student anxiety and stress. Many of the students feel a sense of "overwhelm" which is impacting their performances within the classroom. The goal of this project is to create a calming space where students can refocus and work on the designated task. No matter the subject we teach, it is important to teach mindfulness as it directly relates to student success. My goal is to start by redecorating my classroom to encourage students to become more mindful and aware. I have already started this process by altering the lighting in my classroom and adopting a more neutral themed color palette. The effects from these minor changes have been tremendous. In addition, I also plan to use this space as a starting point to incorporate and teach daily meditation practices within the classroom.
