To help my students learn amid the pandemic, I could use a cash register. Generally, my students are working in restaurants, coffee shops, and retail stores. They get a variety of job skills such as cleaning tables, refilling and restocking kitchen items, sweeping and mopping, and dishwashing. One area where they are not gaining as much experience in their work environments is at the cash register. The cash register is an area that proves to be intimidating and frankly scary. Living through a pandemic has disrupted routines and limited social interactions for these students, both of which are very important for student success. Providing an opportunity to learn customer service through the practice of using a cash register in the classroom will give them an extra set of skills that they can take with them to a new job. Learning in a safe and supportive environment will help them to gain the confidence they need to interact with customers, take orders and give change. By using a real cash register students will also gain a realistic chance to interact with money.
