One of my ultimate goals as a teacher is to take the subject that sends shivers down the world's spine and turning it into something fun and maybe not so bad after all! I believe that keeping students engaged in any subject is the key to unlocking their love of learning. And, for me, engagement starts with games. Through this COVID pandemic, learning math has been a sore spot, lacking all the hands-on, group activities and being replaced with virtual breakout rooms teachers hope work. These lack lustre activities have led to decreased participation and lack of foundational knowledge students need to be successful in any math course. With the purchase of these games I will be able to bring not only engagement and understanding back into my classroom, but also the "fun" in fundamentals. My students will use these games for everything from warm up activities and foundational topic practice - working on closing those COVID gaps - to exit activities and test prep. They will practice their math skills to earn "turns" in the game by getting questions correct. This leads to not only increased participation, understanding, and a safe space for making mistakes, but also a strong, tight knit class community. Something that helps our class flourish to the highest extent! I hope to continue to grow my game-based learning strategies by adding these to our collection and keeping students excited and engaged in math practice.
