I would like for our students to first design and build a stringed instrument, similar to a banjo. I have significant experience in instrument building and can show them the basic design. Once we have a prototype we all approve of we will build the necessary jigs and presses to reproduce identical parts for the instruments and set up a basic assembly line to make 50+ banjos. The end goal is to package the instruments and attempt to sell them at a local farmers/craft market at the end of the school year. That money would then be used to purchase additional materials for our shop. Additionally, it would teach the students the entire process from obtaining the raw materials, manufacturing, marketing and earning a profit. This would be an invaluable lesson for them to carry with them when they eventually graduate high school and enter the job market.
