My students are taking part in a pilot program where they study STEM through space education using NASA curriculum. This program was instituted as a way to give students more opportunities to experience primarily science lessons (but all the STEM fields are included) in an attempt to get them caught up from education missed because of COVID-19. The hook to help the students feel like they are not just being forced to take a second science class is by focusing the class on space while they receive a well-rounded STEM practices education. As a social-emotional component, we have experienced that student confidence to present in front of peers and/or an audience has diminished due to time spent alone and behind screens. As a component of this class, students will present what they have learned at a community open house scheduled for the second weekend of May. With the addition of these telescopes, students will be able to demonstrate and teach telescope use to the public as well as present what they have learned in other STEM aspects of the class.
