Helping students read about current events will improve their reading comprehension and confidence. Because current events are regularly discussed among their peers, these resources will help them identify information versus hearsay, and will give them opportunities to practice effective research and reading skills. For example, reading about current events in TIME for Kids will encourage them to evaluate their understanding about current events, their sources of information, and how those sources shape and shift their opinions and understanding of events as they unfold. Giving them tangible practice with both non-fiction and realistic fiction will provide ample resources for classroom discussions and the skills to transfer these skills across the curriculum.
