During the last few years more and more efforts have been made to keep music and the arts alive during the virus. To keep the safety of my students at top priority, I have reduced the amount of time singing and have set the recorder and any other wind instruments on the back burner. This means that students have less opportunity to apply what they have learned in music to instruments. Many of my students have expressed that they would like to learn ukulele and have the desire to be involved in the music making process. Ukulele is a valuable classroom tool that can help open discussions about cultural appreciation and heritage of instruments. Teaching ukulele also helps with student engagement and provides students with hands-on music making experiences. Students learn best when they are active in the process, and one of the best ways to connect with other people and peers is through music. This year it is more important than ever to communicate and to express through music.
