Engagement is the key to overcoming apathy and building a strong classroom atmosphere. Hands-on activities, labs, review games, and small group interactions all require students to involve themselves in the learning process. But students bring everything from minor distractions to full-blown nomophobia into the classroom with their handheld devices. From a random text to scrolling through social media feeds and video chatting peers during a lesson, interruptions from phones make building a strong classroom increasingly difficult. Combined with an incentive program, a cell phone locker gives students a place to "check" the virtual world for ninety minutes. Being present not only builds academic skills, but begins to close social-emotional gaps and self-esteem.
