My students will paint, using watercolors and tempera paints, while learning about still life, portrait, landscape, and famous artists from different cultural backgrounds and art periods. The students will also use their hands to manipulate clay, weave, trace, cut, and draw, which builds their fine motor skills- the same skills that children need to learn to write letters and words. Finally they will create a variety of craft projects, which use a range of materials they aren't typically exposed to at home. Participating in the arts also develops students' language, mathematics, science, and social skills, while strengthening the synapses between brain cells! The artist in them searches for creative expression, and the scientist in them figures out the way to do it! Art is a valuable learning process. I often start my lessons with literature to strengthen language and reading skills when possible. A carpet will really help when sitting on the hard classroom floor! Art class is useful for all age students, as well as children with special needs.
