Students with ASD need extra visual supports in classroom to be able to participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade level topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.(ELA-Literacy/SL.3.6/) Students in the spectrum of autism have social/emotional/communication delays that affect their ability to learn and communicate basic needs. All students in my classroom are visual learners and need color pictures to be able to communicate basic needs or learn the basic curriculum. Visuals are the basis for learning in my classroom. Some students are communicating through a picture exchange system and as they advance their communication new pictures need to be added to their communication board on daily basis. Having a color printer at hand means to be able to expand their vocabulary and help them produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation (students can verbalize or use visual aides to describe their thinking).
