As a special education teacher, I not only teach academic concepts but also life skills. My students all face challenges in academic learning in their regular education classrooms but are also challenged in organizational skills. When these two challenges collide, it leaves students lost and confused about where they are in an assignment or what they need to do next. The more organized they can be the more successful they are. However, organization needs to directly be taught to them. As I do not have my students for a full day, but only for an hour per day in small groups, we work around one large table with no place to store personal supplies and all of their assignments they have worked so hard to complete. Providing a storage drawer for each of my students will help me as I teach them to be organized and give them a place of their own to apply this skill. This also leads students to begin to take charge of their own learning by being responsible and motivated to keep supplies and assignments in order and ready to complete. A storage drawer might seem like a inconsequential item in the world of academics but can lead to big results in a student's academic career.
