MAP Accelerator, which is an online program powered by Khan Academy, is an incredible tool to help our students increase their math skills. It gives the students practice on their own grade level, and slowly builds them up to be performing math on grade level. One of these grade-level standards is 7.NS.A.3: solving real world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational numbers. In order for them to succeed with this program, they need to be watching the videos that explain the math skill, and thus they really need headphones. Another great tool to help students with their math skills is the use of whiteboards and dry erase markers. For every lesson, we engage in whole group practice. This allows me to give them instant feedback on how they are solving the math problems. One of the major standards we work on is recognizing and representing proportional relationships between quantities, which is standard 7.RP.A.2. While using whiteboards is very effective in helping them learn, an obstacle we often face is that the markers dry out and need to be replaced. We never seem to have enough. Lastly, after whole group practice, we often complete our guided practice in partners and groups. Once they find their classmates they are working with, I allow them to find a place around the room in which to work. They really enjoy sitting on the floor and working with their teammates. Having rugs and pillows would make working on math more comfortable and enjoyable.
