Our new science program puts students in the driver's seat. They are introduced to a phenomena in the real world and students take off from there. They develop driving questions that steer our almost daily investigations to not only understand our anchoring phenomena, but apply it to other real world examples and related phenomena. This program creates an environment were students feel it's not the teacher's classroom with "her" lesson plans, but it is their classroom and their path to understanding, the teacher is only along for the ride. As students "drive" deeper into concepts we spend a lot of time sharing information and developing questions. As our investigations develop, students spend time looking deeper at materials. The handheld microscopes will be used throughout the year in various investigations where students need to look closer at substances and reactions. We also go through many consumable items, like markers and post its when we are developing higher level questions and sharing information. A big part of our chemical reactions and matter cycling units require the teacher to have boiling hot water to run tests on different substance. The electric kettle will help us to provide students these hands on investigations. Your help movies science from the text to their hands, and when we do things with our hands, our minds truly understand!
