This project is a collaboration between the library, school social workers, and school counselors to provide a space for students to decompress, regulate their emotions, learn about coping skills, practice self-care, and use sensory tools to help curve their anxiety. The Nevada Department of Education is in the process of aligning SEAD competencies and practices with academic content standards. The current statewide adoption of SEAD competencies can be found at Nevada Statewide Social and Emotional Competencies. The SEAD (Social, Emotional, and Academic Development) Competencies focus on Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making. Creating a space at school that focuses on our students' mental health and overall wellbeing at school is vital to aid in their success at school. Our students are facing challenges that we have never imagined. Mental health is and will be affecting our students for the foreseeable future. As a school social worker, my job is all about prevention or immediate action. If we can prevent an anxiety attack by placing a student in the calming room to regulate and gain skills to overcome this in the future, then we are doing our job properly. This project allows me to gain the tools necessary to create an environment that will foster social-emotional learning, emotional regulation, anger management, and create a safe space for students to de-escalate in. The supplies (playing with a stress ball, using a brain puzzle, and sand trays) all are distraction tools that will help students when they are having an anxiety attack or stressful day. Some of these will also be used in an anxiety group that will help aid students in being able to overcome their anxiety; essential oil rollers and the slime kits are tools for them to have in their backpack after the group ends.
