My classroom is new and I have some hand me down books and no specific library area yet. I want our library to be a place that my students really enjoy and feel comfortable in. I read on the carpet (no rug) to them, and they also try to read independently! The rug will give us a specific area to sit and feel comfortable when reading. My students are taught that every book in our library is to be treated with care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. Flexible seating such as the bean bag chairs, allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. My students choose to work in a variety of locations in our room. It is difficult for a lot of them to sit still in one place. Giving them a choice of where to sit rather than at a desk is a great way to motivate them. My students are less disruptive when they are given a choice of where to work. I stop and teach where ever my students are willing to work. With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own ability level. They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. RF.K.1 introduces print concepts to my students. RF.K.5 introduces the craft and structure of a book. RL.1.1 introduces my students to the key ideas and details of the text.
